With a chic industrial design that features exposed brick and natural wood, Zaffron Kitchen resonates a contemporary and casual European vibe - a place one would expect to see steak and fries. However, the ornate tiles that cover the five-foot-way of this Katong eatery hint at an exotic South Asian influence, and a peek into the sizeable theatre kitchen reveals a tandoor oven and an unmistakable mound of prata dough.
The latest brainchild of First Gourmet Pte Ltd, the group responsible for Prata Wala and Ottoman Kebab & Grill, Zaffron Kitchen boosts an extensive range of authentic Indian fare in a stylish yet family-friendly setting with a play area for children aged seven and below. Kids are also given their own interactive order cards and will look forward to freshly popped popcorns during the weekends.
The culinary team, led by head chef Sheikh Asabulla from North India, serves affordable treats from North and South India, as well as local favourites such as pratas. Fans of tandoori fare must try the malai tikka (chicken marinated in paneer cheese), which is both tangy and smoky. For a more substantial meal, the dum chicken biryani features a well-marinated chicken thigh, and is ingeniously sealed with a thin layer of dough and lightly baked, resulting in a moist and flavourful dish. Served in hearty portions, the food at Zaffron is ideal for sharing, but busy go-getters may opt for the weekday lunch set priced at $12.90.
Apart from the main dining hall, diners may also perch themselves by the high table and enjoy an after-work tipple with snacks such as the ever-popular poppadum, which also comes in a black pepper version cooked in the tandoor - but be warned, the heat will creep up on you - or the papdi chaat, a popular North Indian street food of homemade fried dough wafers topped with sev (vermicelli-like crispy bits) and a refreshing mix of sweet yoghurt, mint, and tamarind sauce.
