Salt Grill + Bar

Opened just over a month ago at UE Square, the new District 10 promises to deliver an enjoyable drinking and dining experience for those after unpretentious set-ups.

A departure from its earlier incarnation at Winstedt Road, this outfit is designed with an eco-friendly concept in mind. From the ceiling to the bar top counters to the wooden paneling around the restaurant, most wood fittings have been salvaged from its previous location, and restored and refurnished. The result is an inviting space, complemented by scrumptious eats and interesting cocktails.

The extensive food menu is a mix of European dishes such as charcuterie platters, pizzas, pastas, duck confit and braised wagyu beef cheek, alongside casual western plates like crab cakes and Hoegaarden battered fish and chips with mint mushy peas.

We tried the trio of mini Black Angus cheddar cheeseburgers - three lip-smacking silver dollar sized burgers cradling juicy, char-grilled beef patties; and the parmesan cheese and foie gras croquettes. The latter's worth ordering if you fancy rich foie with sharp-tasting cheese. We skipped its selection of salads and headed straight for the mains. The seabass meuniere with light lemon butter sauce and baby new parsley potatoes was balanced in taste and texture, while the steak frites of Australian tenderloin, grilled over hot charcoal and served with natural cut French fries and mixed salad, satisfied with its tender, juicy bite and crisp fries.

To round off, we ordered the District 10 chocolate sundae, Baileys and caramelised hazelnut affogato, and the pavlova. The sundae was a real delight to savour - well frozen, chocolatey and studded with fragrant roasted nuts. The affogato with Baileys delivered a subtle kick of booze and caffeine and we recommend it if you're undecided between coffee and dessert. For those who fancy pavlovas, theirs is petite, fuss-free and dressed simply with fresh berries, just the way we like it. If you're in search of after-work cocktails, there's a good selection to be had.
