The precious, cosy ambience of this 14 year-old establishment is not its only draw. A recent menu revamp has since caused quite a stir amongst diners, giving the restaurant recognition for more than just tea and scones.
Many would expect the menu to read like a brief list of bakes and salads, but flipping through, one will marvel at the variety offered in its nine-page menu filled with dishes inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fables. The Little Mermaid, is a house speciality of herring made three ways: hipped-curry pickle, rollmops and spiced with condiments. While herring may be irksome to those who don’t favour raw or cured foods, the freshness here is undoubted although the pickling could do without the excess sweetness. The Ugly Duckling is a pistachio-crusted duck liver pan-fried to crispy perfection without compromising its creamy interior and refreshingly paired with glazed apples, honey balsamic reduction and mint syrup.
The Butterfly), a pan-fried butterfly salmon fillet laid on a duo of potato gratin and braised fennel pommery mustard in orange sauce, comes served as a Yin-Yang symbol reflecting its harmonious flavours. But perhaps the ultimate highlights are The Phoenix Bird and the Grass-Fed Rib-Eye— two unique, delicious creations by the affable Chef Norman Abdullah. The former — the only Asian dish on the menu — is a beautiful chicken curry served with rice, pappadum and mango chutney. Its thickness is achieved from long simmers, not coconut milk, hence making it a healthier option. The latter is a lemon herb-marinated ribeye, which was equally lip-smacking with its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness married with a subtle wild mushroom sauce. Meal portions here are hearty but if you must indulge, order The Daisy— a sticky date pudding made with caramelised red dates and served warm with fresh fruit, light butterscotch sauce and fresh cream.
