Tucked away in the lush greenery of the Dempsey area, next to Hacienda Bar, is the new Roadhouse, a cosy, sun-dappled spot. This American-style diner has a contemporary feel, adorned with vibrant and quirky art pieces by co-owner Koh Tien Gui who is an avid artist. Diners can choose to sit at the long communal table in the centre or at individual tables on the side.
This eatery is managed by the Prive Group, with head chef Derek Ang and pastry chef Esther Cheng overseeing the menu. The team rolls out hearty diner-style staples from burgers and buffalo wings to BBQ kurobuta baby back ribs. If you are on a diet, this place is not meant for you. But if you want generously portioned dishes that are big on flavours, then make your way there.
Starters to munch on include shrimp in a blanket - jumbo shrimps wrapped in maple roasted bacon - served with roasted tomatoes and jalapeno salsa as well as uniquely spicy garlic parmesan buffalo wings. The heat level can be adjusted according to your preference (thankfully).
The burgers are some of the best we've tried. You can go classic with the Plain Jane - filled with wagyu patty, pickles, ketchup and mustard, or bring on the decadence with the bacon marinated burger. The latter comprises a perfectly grilled 200g wagyu patty, melted gorgonzola, streaky bacon, caramelised onions, aioli and sautéed mushrooms sandwiched between fluffy homemade buns. The stack of chips and coleslaw are excellent accompaniments too. The kitchen's team not so little ‘secret' lies in the Josper Grill - a hybrid barbecue grill and oven that juicy meats and burger patties are cooked in.
Other dishes meant for sharing are the chermoula roast chicken, Spanish suckling piglet and Italian-style pizzas. Take your pick from the usual margherita and marinara or try the wild mushroom and aioli - with mayonnaise, garlic, truffle oil, ricotta and wild rocket.
Desserts are not for the faint-hearted. Worth all the calories are the S'mores Ice Cream Cake with fire-roasted marshmallow bubbles, vanilla toffee ice cream and graham cracker base, as well as warm salted triple-nut tart filled with sticky and warm salted almond, pecan, walnut and topped with vanilla ice cream.
This family-friendly venue also serves set lunches from Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 2.30pm ($25 for two courses and $28 for three courses). On weekends, head there for a robust brunch of eggs and pancakes from 9am to 4pm.
