Peperoni Pizzeria

Les Amis has opened their second Peperoni Pizzeria in the Bukit Timah vicinity, a cheery 1960s retro-styled pizzeria complete with jukebox and cherry-red fixtures. The signature XXL family pizza that covers the table with its 21-inch diameter is the draw, as are the luscious handcrafted coffees from Les Amis Group’s head barista Tony Tan – naturally, he gets his beans from Papa Palheta. Over at the bar, Belgian beers, perfectly served in their unique mugs, can be had. The Tripel Karmeliat, for instance, blooms in a tulip-shaped glass – and it’s possibly the best Belgian beer to indulge in, with a triple-grain, fruity and crystal clear taste.

At our sampling, we received our 12-inch pizzas in 10 minutes flat, the crust still crisp and slightly blackened though the centre sagged a little from the weight of the toppings. With the option to have two toppings on each pizza, we happily indulged in the vegetarian combination of four cheeses and wild mushrooms, and another porky combination of proscuitto crudo and saucisson with bell peppers. All four pizza flavours stood out for their fragrance and freshness of the ingredients, especially the saucisson with bell peppers, which packed robust colour with red and green bell peppers and sweet sautéed onions and whole roasted garlic on top. The much-loved aglio olio from the original branch also appears here in glorious garlicky force – not for the faint-hearted as there is more sliced garlic than you could possibly finish. Sides of bitterballen (meatballs) turned out to be a curious batter-crusted deepfried ball of mince meat, dipped with mustard – at $8 for 8 pieces, it was a good beer snack. The crispy fried calamari is accompanied by crisp fried thin sliced onions with two dips – another signature gourmet touch from Les Amis. There is a good range of comforting desserts to choose from – another sampling of four sweets concluded with the triumph of the little-known sformato, an oven-basked ricotta cheese “soufflé” that is here drenched with lemon cream and hazelnut caramel sauce for a substantial, memorable end. To keep it light, try the vanilla bean crème brulee or the moist tiramisu served in a cup – presumably as it is too liquid to stand in a bowl. Overall, the trademark Peperoni humour and attention to the dining experience will ensure that it gets a steady stream of customers, especially for families in the area. 7 Binjai Park, Tel: 6463 7800
