For traditional Cantonese cuisine in a comfortable modern setting, Peach Garden Chinese Restaurant is our go-to place. The fact that the restaurant's success is the stuff of fairy tales - two former waitresses joined forces, set up shop, and voila! - draws us more than any marketing spiel could ever do.
But apart from our genuine desire to support local entrepreneurs, the cuisine is the real draw here. Peach Garden serves up delicious wholesome fare that runs the gamut from traditional staples to more adventurous creations. Apart from Cantonese offerings, you will also find dishes from Sichuan and Beijing on its menu.
Try the roasted Beijing duck (S60), a firm favourite for its finely sliced duck meat. It is served with rather sweet egg crepes, which overpower the succulent meat, so do ask for regular rice flour crepes. Another signature is the fried eggplant with pork floss (S$8). Ours was slightly over-coated with flour but we enjoyed crunching down on the crispy pork floss, an excellent contrast to the soft eggplant. For mains, sample the sea perch (S$13), delicately fried to a golden crisp and lightly drizzled with sweet and sour sauce.
No meal is quite complete without a sweet ending. Try the pulau hitam and vanilla ice cream served in a coconut (S6.80), a lovely creation inspired by our local sweet.
And speaking of sweet endings, Peach Garden (which now boasts four outlets on the island) was acquired by a local cater just this March - for a princely sum of S$10.2 million. Now, that's what we call a sure testimony of the restaurant's winning formula.
