Nestled in the crowds of China Square, a new Japanese addition has joined the gastronomic block - Hinoki Japanese Dining is about quality sushi and izakaya without the steep price tags. And those concerned about radiation issues need not fear, as Hinoki sources most of their fish from Osaka in south Japan.
A large variety of at least 10 different bento boxes are available during lunch, ranging from $18 to $32. A la carte starters vary from traditional Japanese to the more contemporary. Their crisp momotaro tomatoes for example, are drizzled with truffle oil (and it seems, so are most of their raw fish platters as well).
For the more adventurous, try the grilled tuna throat. The texture is denser and slightly drier than the other parts of the fish, but it proves to be a filling entrée and an interesting experience - since tuna throat is usually not served at most Japanese restaurants. Hinoki's sushi and makimoni selections are fresh and well-made, especially for a quick afternoon lunch on a weekday.
Hinoki Japanese Dining is at #01-50/53 China Square Central (South Bridge Court), 22 Cross Street, Tel: 6536-7746
