Cocotte

French-style dishes, great produce, and communal dining are the things you will get to experience when eating at Cocotte. The setting of this traditional French bistro at the brand new Wanderlust Hotel in Little India has a rustic-feel to it, decked out with restored timber flooring and old wine crates.

The menu is designed for sharing, so gather a few friends and head there. For starters, there are classics done in a twist such as the escargots served with miniature cheese puff burgers and a dab of herbed butter. A crowd favourite is the fried tripe which has been pre-cooked in court bouillon until tender, then coated with paprika and breadcrumbs and deep-fried until utterly crispy.

Standouts for mains include the roast pork collar with Dijon mustard, which is ultra tender thanks to slow braising in stock and white port reduction before roasting. For a lighter option, try the whole sole meuniere served in an aromatic brown butter sauce. And of course there is the signature chicken that everyone has been raving about. What you get is a whole organic, hormone free chicken marinated for two days and roasted – served with fresh herb butter, gravy, roast baby potatoes and beans. Torte de Jour or Tart of the Day is ideal for lunch. The filling varies from leeks and creamy mushroom to ratatouille and scallops. But the best part about the tart is the golden brown pastry, rich in high quality butter.

Do leave room for the sublime desserts, especially the Chocolate Souffle Cake Duo – presented on a small wooden board are two slices of flourless dark chocolate cake, one hot, one cold, and complemeted by Chantilly cream on the side. Another irresistible  dessert is the citron tart with homemade lemon cream and orange tuile. The buttery pastry is once again the highlight. And finally, if you must, there are air-flown artisanal cheeses to be had too at the end of your meal. Wanderlust, No.2 Dickson Road, Tel: 6298 1188, www.restaurantcocotte.com
