Set up by the family-run Raj Group of Restaurants, the one-and-a-half year-old vegetarian establishment fulfils its promise of making diners salivate over some seriously delicious vegetarian fare — a menu comprising a selection of tasty creations borrowed from various cuisines (read: Mexican burritos, American burgers and Italian pasta dishes), infused with an Indian flavour.
Take our starter, for instance, which was a colourful serving of one of the restaurant’s star orders, the enchiladas Remo On the platter were four baked soft taco rolls filled to the plump with stir-fried vegetables, topped with a fresh and tangy tomato and white cheese sauces. Appearance-wise, they may be akin to a familiar local snack but this veggie roll didn’t need any meat for its burst of natural flavour. Our next course was the Indian-inspired paneer burger. The freshness of the paneer (Indian cottage cheese) goes undoubted and the addition of potatoes and spices made for a scrumptious treat.
After cleansing our palates with sips of the café’s popular Green Refresher and Nirvana— coolers made with fresh fruit), Italian dishes were then introduced to our table. The penne arrabbiata is a fiery serving of perfectly al dente pasta tossed in a spicy tomato sauce, accompanied by capsicums and button mushrooms. This dish may be a little spicy for those with a low threshold for chilli heat. The plates that followed were the house specialities: the lasagne with soy mince granules) and gratin a la Verdure, both demonstrating the café’s selection of bakes. The lasagne can be seen as a healthier alternative to its original Italian cousin, and is a lovely change for the palate. But the soy granules were a tad too sweet and its proportion to the pasta and cheese components was imbalanced. The gratin a la Verdure, on the other hand, was an intriguing oven-baked dish of penne pasta with mushrooms, broccoli and red chillies, smothered in tomato sauce and topped with gratinated cheese. The vegetables and mushrooms were adequately tender without turning limp; the al dente pasta was a pleasant contrast to the soft ingredients.
Our final dish came in the form of the Mexican casserole, a wholesome casserole that is Café Salivation's blend of various cuisines into one, comprising ingredients such as paneer, Cheddar cheese, rice, capsicum and olives baked with the signature home-made tomato sauce. This is definitely the dish for sharing or for those who are looking to have a hearty one-dish meal.
