Anar

Like an oasis at the edge of Resorts World Sentosa, Anar offers a true Middle Eastern experience.

There are restaurants that cater to some of your senses, but rarely a place that can please all of them. Anar has taken much care into presenting a Middle Eastern experience with traditional Arabic food framed by the carefully chosen décor - the oil lamps, table tops, plates and decorated lanterns were sourced from Morocco, Lebanon, Syria and United Arab Emirates.

The concept of the restaurant comes from an existing chain of Anar restaurants in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which boasts a who’s who clientele of well-known personalities, leading politicians and celebrities. Here in Singapore, the kitchen follows the same traditional recipes and marinades that have been used for centuries, and which have made the brand so popular.

To get started, the moutabbal, a salad of fresh eggplants with sesame seed paste, crushed garlic and lemon juice, topped with parsley and pomegranate seeds, is light and refreshing, and introduces your palate to the flavours to come. Traditionalists would also want to try the baba ghanoush, which is roasted eggplants, garden herbs, fresh green pepper, tomato, crushed garlic and onion, topped with pomegranate syrup.

Meats are often charcoal grilled and for the best of two choices, the kebab sultani is a beef fillet and minced lamb kebab accompanied by saffron rice. The minced lamb, which is minced three times, has a buttery soft texture that makes it so easy to eat and devour. The riz be lahem ala djaji is a traditional Ottoman dish served during special occasions, and it’s hard not to see why – Egyptian long grain rice is mixed with minced meat and Arabic spices, topped with a chicken breast and roasted nuts. A cool yoghurt dressing adds the finishing touch to this all-rounded dish bursting with flavours.

The most pleasant dessert is the falodeh shirazi. Shirazi (an ancient Persian city) style noodles made from starch are combined with rose water and served with fresh lime juice. It’s just the right way to finish off a Middle Eastern experience. If by now, you’ve filled up on the meats and want something a little sweet but not quite as big as a dessert, the Jasmine belle or prickled pear highball mocktails shouldn’t be missed.

Anar is 26 Sentosa Gateway, #01-291, Resorts World Sentosa. Tel: 6884-6989.
