Dear Editor,
Which country started grape stomping as part of a winemaking process and why?
Recorded data reveal Italy started the process as far back as 200 BC. For centuries since then, it became an integral part of the harvest ceremony. First, grapes were carefully and gently picked by hand, then followed by grape stomping with bare feet, which was the method of choice to extract the juice from the grapes. Every country that made wine used it until it was banned for sanitation/health purposes in the 20th century.
