Dear Editor,
From which country did the Christmas fruit cake originate ?
Online records reveal that the ubiquitous Christmas fruit cakes has its origin in the medieval times and became very popular in Europe, particularly England in the 1400s. It then spread to the United States with the arrival of the Pilgrims. Every country has its version and each claim to make the best. The original recipe had pomegranate seeds, with pine nuts and raisins that were mixed into barley mash. Honey, spices, and preserved fruits were also present. The more modern version has rhum or other alcoholic type of beverage added to preserve it longer. It was a staple for crusaders and hunters who spent a long time away from home.
