Meet the Winemaker: Ray Gatt

The owner of boutique Australian winery Eden Springs talks to our resident Master of Wine, Debra Meiburg, about his award-winning shiraz and more


Master of Wine, Debra Meiburg meets Ray Gatt, the founder of Eden Springs, a boutique winery in Eden Valley at the Barossa region of South Australia. Ray is actually an IT professional who is based in Hong Kong for half the year and Adelaide for the other half. Eden Springs was the standout success of the inaugural Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2009, winning four trophies out of 32. The award-winning wines include Eden Springs Barossa Valley Shiraz 2007 (Best Red Wine below HK$200), Eden Springs High Eden Riesling 2009 (Best White Wine below HK$150) and Eden Springs High Eden Shiraz 2007 (Best Shiraz and Best Australian Shiraz). Ray also talks about how an IT professional like him became a winemaker, and shares a few tips for those eager to fufill their vintner dream as well.
