Although turnip cakes are commonly found on dim sum menus, it is also a must-have snack to have on the dining table during Chinese New Year. It is a custom to enjoy the turnip cake, steamed and often pan-fried before serving to give it a golden colour, as it is a symbol of prosperity and rising fortune.
To celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dragon, we head to Shang Palace, the exquisite Chinese restaurant at the Kowloon Shangri-La in Tsim Sha Tsui, to learn how to prepare the traditional treat from executive Chinese chef Mok Kit-keung.
In the above video, chef Mok walks us through the steps of preparing the turnip cake, as well as giving us useful tips, such as the perfect size of the turnips shreds and how to keep the turnip cake white, so we can treat our beloved ones with a special homemade turnip cake this year.
