Setting
Hidden away underground on the always happening Wyndham Street, dining at Yun Fu feels a bit like entering a secret, ancient spirit world. After descending down a dark staircase, you are led past the bar down a long dark hallway flanked by old-world screen doors on either side, from which ominous red lights emanate. In the centre of the main dining room is a giant Buddha figure and in every corner are painted Chinese masks atop gingham cloth, which lends an eerie feeling that you are being watched at all times. On the ceiling, two more masked ghouls appear to be flying around. While the decor and ambience is impressive, it is also a bit spooky. |

Food
Start a meal at Yun Fu with the fresh abalone infused with wasabi sauce – four generous pieces of abalone are steeped in wasabi, providing a delightful spicy punch, and served atop a bed of chives and bean sprouts. The smoked duck and mushroom roll is savory and filling, but the flavor of smoked ham overpowers the delicate flavor of duck. Yun Fu’s signature crispy lamb ribs should not be missed – it can convert even those who don’t usually like lamb with its tender, succulent meat between delightfully crispy skin, served with a light garlic chive soy sauce that adds an additional dimension of savouriness to the dish. Wok-fried spicy chicken with Sichuan peppers is another signature dish and one of the most impressive to behold – a large dish with a mountain of red peppers is brought to the table and diners must dig through the peppers for the deliciously battered and fried chicken below. Finish the meal with any of Yun Fu’s excellent fried rice or a bowl of dan dan mian. |

Wine
A helpful wine list groups wines among France, Italy and the New World and includes descriptions and tasting notes. Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is available by the glass for HK$78 – a well-rounded red with hints of blackberry, it goes well with any red meat dishes. |

Attended the venue a little over a month ago with guests from overseas. Completely overrated and bad service by staff and restaurant management, this place is an embarrassment to all eateries in this country. As soon as we sat down, we were forced to hurriedly select our main dishes despite not even having had to time to peruse the menu. But then again, there is nothing particularly special on the menu to peruse because I asked for a dish to be slightly amended, and was met with staunch resistance. Further, an additional entrée which we did not order was given to us accidently, which we decided to accept to keep the peace given the waitress was rude and aggressive.
The most disappointing thing was the feedback from the restaurant manager: they did not address the crux of the issues raised, nor did they apologise for the lack-lustre service. For a “well established” restaurant, they certainly did not live up to the expectation. Take your friends and money elsewhere, there are plenty of other places that actually understands how to serve like a proper restaurant. |
