Setting
This popular Korean restaurant underwent refurbishment and only reopened in mid-November 2011. The interior has been significantly lightened, thanks to the use of paler wooden tables and partitions, as well as a light grey stone floor. There are eight private dining rooms to allow for private dining, although the best tables are still probably the ones lining the windows on the right hand side of the restaurant.

Food
The food at Sorobal for the most part is made up of Korean classics done right. The barbecued options are high quality and prepared expertly at your table. Must-try cuts of meat include the Korean tenderloin (HK$318 per 120g) and double-sized marinated spare ribs (HK$255) which are huge and marinated to sweet perfection. Interestingly, barbecued items are served without the traditional accoutrement of lettuce leaves, raw garlic and chili sauce. Instead, the meat is served with salted sesame oil and nothing else, so the superior quality of the meat takes centre stage. The sides here really stand out and lovers of Korean cuisine may be tempted to take some house kimchi home with them. Other dishes worth ordering include the delicious if oily kimchi pancake with pork (HK$105) and the deep-fried kimchi chicken with sweet sauce (HK$68 for small). The fried chicken dish is unashamedly Westernised and is reminiscent of American sweet and sour chicken, but is flawlessly prepared and the kimchi adds a nice kick. Meat lovers who shy from barbeque will appreciate the palace stewed short ribs (HK$148), a great way to appreciate Sorobal’s delicious short ribs without the hassle or clinging aroma of tabletop barbecue. The short ribs are stewed until they fall apart at a touch and are served with root vegetables and mushrooms; this soupy, meaty dish is a perfect accompaniment to a bowl of steamed rice on a chilly night.

Wine
The wine list at Sorobal is sporadic with some good surprises. The bottles are sourced from many different regions but tend to stay within the HK$200-HK$800 range. Wine is available by the bottle or half bottle but surprisingly not by the glass. Staff recommendations are spotty.

Service
The service at Sorobal is perfectly suited to the restaurant. The wait staff is cheerful and omnipresent, attendants tend the grill expertly and the staff is capable and willing to guide you through the menu.
Price
If ordering premium barbecued meats plus two sides, dinner for two will come to about HK$500, without alcohol. While not the cheapest Korean option, the high quality of the dishes on offer makes this reasonable.
