Soho Spice is a little chaotic and slightly cramped, so not the place to go for a romantic evening. There’s a definite buzz to the space and plenty of large groups are chatting and laughing over their meals, which adds to the atmosphere. The outside area provides a nice respite from the noise of the restaurant and it’s a great place to sit on cooler evenings.
Food
Soho Spice offers a variety of Thai and Vietnamese dishes. The extensive menu makes choosing what to eat quite difficult – you’ll want to try everything. The signature prawn rice paper rolls are light and fresh, coming with a tasty mango, cucumber and mandarin dipping sauce. The vegetable dumplings with smoked eggplant, chili, coconut and coriander are on the heavy side, but the smoky eggplant cuts through the curry sauce perfectly. The lamb rack in red curry paste with green coconut curry is tender and juicy, although the accompanying curry is ever so slightly greasy. The spicy fried rice noodles with shredded beef and basil are full of flavour and very more-ish; ask for extra chilli if you like your spice. The purple sticky rice with mango is a refreshing option to finish the meal with; it’s not too sweet and perfectly ripe mango is the ideal accompaniment. The portions are generous and all dishes are designed with sharing in mind, making this a great place to enjoy a meal with friends.
Wine
A comprehensive wine list divided by grape includes wines from a variety of regions, and there’s something to suit every budget. A good range of wines is available by the glass and, for special occasions, you can find some more expensive wines in the “Sommelier’s Selection”.
Service
We had to wait around 10 minutes for our table, but once seated the service was quick and relatively efficient. The staff is friendly and attentive and seem familiar with the menu and wine list. One of our dishes seemed to have been forgotten, but this was swiftly rectified and our dessert was thrown in for free.
Price
Soho Spice represents good value for money. The portions are large and the dishes are tasty and well priced (with many costing less than HK$100). A large meal for two with a bottle of wine came in under HK$500. This restaurant would be great for groups as the food is perfect for sharing.
