Setting
Shang Palace’s decor is a celebration of traditional Chinese culture in all its glory; few restaurants nowadays are as unabashedly oriental. Located in the basement of the Kowloon Shangri-La in Tsim Sha Tsui East, guests are greeted by the sight of a golden Buddha statue flanked by brightly lit carved wooden pillars, while the interior features Chinese paper lanterns, silk paintings and lavishly printed carpets. Red and gold is the dominant theme, with open-work lacquered wooden doors and panels fully lining the walls and extending onto the ceiling. Even the cutlery subtly follows the colour scheme.

Food
The menu opens with twelve signature dishes, although there are unlisted ones which you have to ask for. One example is the braised spare rib (HK$120), a succulent chunk of flavourful pork tied together with a piece of straw as the meat falls away so easily. The lobster in two servings (HK$180) is also a winner, featuring two styles of cooking on the same lobster; fresh juicy lobster meat is sautéed with black bean sauce while the shell is deep-fried to crunchy perfection and seasoned with spicy salt. Also worth trying is the sautéed assorted rice with crab meat, egg white, wolfberries and diced mushrooms (HK$150), which features white and black rice in a creative yin-yang formation. Vegetarians, meat lovers and seafood fans will be suitably impressed with the vast selection and the quality of the produce, which includes Spanish pork, live seafood and a specially-assembled vegetarian set. Other interesting options include Korean-style stone hotpot and a sommelier’s tasting menu.

Wine
Shang Palace carries an impressive range of French wines, with extensive lists of reds, whites and champagnes categorised by region. Most are upmarket boutique wines served by the bottle, but a good selection is also available by the glass. Premium Chinese rice wines are also served.

Service
Warm, welcoming and highly efficient, the staff is well-versed in dishes both on and off the menu. You may request for dishes to be served all at once or one at a time, though do note that the food may come early and be set aside until you finish your course if you choose the latter.
Price
Extravagancies like birds nest and abalone notwithstanding, dinner for two can be enjoyed for HK$1,300 including a glass of wine.
