Setting
Those looking for a world-class steak in Kowloon will be pleasantly surprised with Prime. Nestled off of the rooftop garden terrace atop the confusing Elements mall, this intimate two-story restaurant’s exposed brick, high ceilings covered with mosaic and a perfectly spaced dining area that is reminiscent of a New York loft without sacrificing the charms of an old-school steak house. Out front, the after- work crowd spills onto the square while the cosy interior is ideal for a romantic dinner for two. Diners will be too charmed by the perfectly appointed interior to mind the unfortunate view across the terrace of the Prada store and giant television screen.

Food
Visitors to Prime would be remiss if they did not order one of the premium steaks on offer. The meat is all high grade USDA with the obligatory wagyu top sirloin (HK$778 serves two) thrown in for good measure. The medium-rare 14oz prime rib-eye (HK$398) we ordered was cooked to tender pink perfection, rendering the three underwhelming accompanying sauces unnecessary. Meat lovers with more diverse tastes will certainly be satisfied with Prime’s non-steak options ranging from Australian lamb chops (HK$288); a crispy pork shank with cabbage and apple sauce (HK$158); and their signature jaeger schnitzel (HK$198). Even vegetarians can find something to smile about in the veggie burger (HK$98), burrata salad (HK$158) and the out-of-this-world Swiss cheese fondue with truffle honey, hazelnuts and baguette (HK$198). Those looking for seafood would be well-advised to look elsewhere as the pan-roasted whole Atlantic lobster - served with spaghetti, tomatoes and mint (HK$320) - is chewy and over-powered by the mint. The sides for the most part are standard, well-executed steak house fare and desserts include the unusual apple strudel sundae and a divine peach cobbler with white chocolate ice cream (both HK$78).

Wine
The wine selection is extensive but bottles run on the expensive side. Many wines by the glass as well as a few magnums are on offer. Prime has a preference for new world wines and offers some real surprises, although the staff tends to play it safe with their recommendations.

Service
In the beginning the service was attentive and well-informed, but as the restaurant filled we were lost in the shuffle and it became increasingly difficult to get a waiter’s attention.
Price
At about HK$900 per head without wine, Prime is not cheap but its well-executed dishes are a justifiable splurge on special occasions.
