Though the décor won’t be to everyone’s taste - dark, wood panelling and dim lighting along with busy, brightly-coloured carpets and sofas - Mezzo Grill at the Regal Kowloon hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui has its own homey charm - small and cosy, it’s recommended for family or friends looking for a quiet and fuss-free environment to indulge in some quality meat.

The quality of the produce shines through and the tight but thoughtful selection ensures there is something for everyone. You’ll end up forgiving the rather ordinary presentation, as classic American fare is taken up a notch - cream of mushroom soup comes with truffles, burgers utilise Australian wagyu beef - as well as your choice of comfort dishes such as buffalo wings, onion rings and more. Meat is the speciality here, and fittingly, the USDA prime beef rib-eye comes grilled perfectly to medium rare as requested, with just the lightest touch of seasoning so the meat itself can take centre stage. We recommend having the signature hand-chopped hamburger using the excellent Australian M8 wagyu beef. It comes with all the expected garnishes such as apple-smoked bacon and cheddar cheese but you can throw in a slice of juicy pan-fried foie gras for a little something extra. We also recommend the perfectly broiled half or whole piece of live Boston lobster drizzled with a light and tangy butter sauce - or opt for the Surf and Turf to get the best of both worlds, and at better value for money.

While not extensive in selection and more functional than anything else, the range in vintages and price, plus options by the glass, will ensure that you’ll find something suitable to pair with your meal. However, the waiters obviously need some brushing up on making recommendations. Ask for the master wine list in order to get the best range of choices.

Prompt, friendly and attentive, the service is definitely one of the highlights of Mezzo Grill.

Dinner for two comes up to about HK$1,000, which is reasonable for quality meat and seafood and a glass of wine.
