Formerly Tung Yee Heen, the Chinese restaurant at Grand Lapa Macau has undergone a massive renovation and returns with a handsome new look and changes its name to Kam Lai Heen. The revamped dining hall is welcoming, greeting diners with traditional round tables, elegant place settings and features Chinese paintings and vases. The conspicious gold and green floral lights hanging from the ceiling give the sensation of dining in a Chinese garden. The VIP rooms with the same floral-themed interiors are perfectly suited for intimate private dining. Kam Lai Heen is popular for yam cha and on weekends, the place is bustling with families and large group for dim sum.
Food
Kam Lai Heen offers no-frill Cantonese fare with reasonable prices. With most dishes available in a small or large size, this is a rare Chinese restaurant that is equally suited to a two-person meal or a big family dinner. Kam Lai Heen prides itself on poultry dishes and the conpoy-simmered chicken is fragrant and comes in a generous portion. The sliced barbecued duck is a tasty reminiscent of Peking duck. The thickly sliced duck breast rests tenderly on a bite-sized soft steamed puff. The crispy fried beancurd sheet gives a nice contrast to the dish and matches nicely with the hoi sin sauce. From the seafood section, the sautéed prawns with garlic and chili sauce is disappointing as the prawn is overcooked. To end the meal, there are plenty of Chinese dessert options including the mango and pomelo sago cream, double-boiled milk with ginger sauce or a more decadent version with bird’s nest. Kam Lai Heen is also a traditional dim sum restaurant serving all the classics such as prawn dumpling and taro puff. Also worth mentioning is the Cantonese congee with chicken that is flavourful and smooth.
Wine
No surprise as with most traditional Chinese restaurants, the wine selection is limited and with only one house red and one house white. Overall, there seems little thought put into the wine list.
Service
Staffs are warm and considerate and attuned to the needs of diners, yet could be more familiar and well-versed with the menu.
Price
A filling dinner for two should cost around MOP600.
