Coast epitomizes all that is right and wrong with the wave of Australian cuisine that has swept through Hong Kong. It offers attractive value-fresh ingredients, imaginative cooking and large portions at reasonable prices. Add a sophisticated bar that overlooks SoHo and a 1000 bottle wine cellar that completes the 4,800 square foot eaterie and what else could you desire? In a strange paradox, as a restaurant becomes more competent and ambitious, it reveals more of its vulnerabilities. For Coast, that vulnerability isn't in the kitchen or atmosphere, it's in the cuisine's very foundation. Each dish is tasty, but as a whole, the menu doesn't advance the state of the art of Australian cuisine. And relative to other Australian eateries in Hong Kong, like Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, it doesn't set a new standard. But Coast is a very handsome venue especially the 70-seating bar that literally overlooks the concrete coast of Soho providing a panoramic drinking spot. And after too many cocktails, the restaurant will provide enough gourmet level comfort food to sustain the drinks.
Food
What is Australian cuisine? Executive Chef, Aaron Kearney even admitted that, "Australian cuisine wasn't as culturally distinctive as French, Italian or Chinese cuisines with hundreds of years of history. Australian cuisine was more about the creative cooking with the freshest ingredients, based on all the fresh seafood, game, beef and vegetables available in Australia." Except for kangaroo meat, there's nothing unique about the use of fresh ingredients. Decades of immigration from Europe and Asia has stirred and invigorated the Australian dining scene with European and Asian influences, but besides that modern Australian cuisine is highly derivative. But, since we're not in Australia, it seems that all of Hong Kong's Australian restaurants source from the same group of local importers. The problem is that Hong Kong has become a frontier for too many Australian restaurants and chefs at the same time. It has resulted in a sameness, almost a homogeneity in the ingredients. Australian chefs have certainly added zest, verve and some new techniques to the dining scene, but nothing that is truly groundbreaking or experimental. The Huntsman pie Aussie style (HK$160) is a uniquely marinated and slow cooked mix of kangaroo and pork chunks that are flavourful, but not too gamey. Coast sources its kangaroo meat from specialty farms. Another pie is their specialty lamb shank pie- a whole lamb shank baked with chestnuts and a trio of mushrooms served in puff pastry (HK$160). Most of the specialty mains are attractive and filling and cost less than HK$200. Organic chicken schnitzel, Angus steak sandwich are made from fresh meats. Vegetarians are well served with the no animal burger, a zucchini and corn fritter with arugula, roasted cherry tomatoes, caramelised onion and tzatziki. The roasted vegetable stack comprised layered seasonal vegetables with creamy sweet potato mash.

Coast Adds New Dishes to its Menu
Coast, the relaxing and airy bistro in Soho, has recently expanded its menu. Gym bunnies fresh from Pure next door will love the expanded salad selection, including a warm Mediterranean lamb salad (with West Australian lamb), cous cous, mixed vegetables, arugula and tzatziki. Other additions include heartier dishes such as homemade pasta bolognese, ravioli or Boscaiola (bacon and mushroom sauce). However, staples of the restaurant such as its freshly shucked oysters, prime steaks and market-fresh fish will continue to be on the menu.

What a disappointment! Looks can be so deceiving. Obviously a lot of money was spent on the refit and decor of this restaurant, but I get the impression they ran out of money with the staff.
The menu is very heavy, with very little healthy or non-fried items. The set menu, which is double the price of their local counterparts, is very uninspiring. Who would want kangaroo pie followed by lamb pie? Or salmon with anchovy sauce? The staff did not know how to describe the menu, and had not tasted anything on the menu, but still felt they had the knowledge to offer suggestions. The organic chicken schnitzel was swimming in grease, and when an issue was raised, the manager seemed to place the blame on us rather than the poorly cooked food. No alternative meal was suggested, and the full price was charged for an uneaten inedible meal.
To add insult, their credit card machine wasnt working, so we had to journey to the ATM machine to pay for the uneaten inedible meal.
What a let down....initial impressions are favourable and the decor pleasing. The wine list is good and we enjoyed our Coonawara red. However, the enjoyment ends there. The service (a Nepali girl) was unsmiling and sultry throughout and the food was a big let down. The chips with the barramundi were burnt and the chicken was tasteless and dry. We skipped dessert and coffee as the desire was just to leave. No.
Reviews can be deceiving! I am embarrassed and also sad that I read the above review and took it so literally!
A few weeks ago a friend organised his birthday dinner at Coast. I had never been as I had read the above review and decided to steer clear.
I could not say no to a birthday dinner based on a review so I went...
Yes, it does look amazing and the furniture and feel are really nice.
The menu was not heavy, there were four or five different salads to choose from as well as the fresh fish options which were amazing (I had the salmon - yum)we also enjoyed a share plate to start which was not heavy or fried. The staff were very helpful and always attentive and asked before getting another bottle of sparkling water out and just adding it to your bill.
After a few wines I decided to confess that I had read this review and that was why I had not been before. We discussed it at length and decided that just because you complain about your meal does not mean you get it for free and we also worked out that the closest ATM was 2 minutes away!!
The staff were happy for us to split the bill with several credit cards and also cash and were nice enough to give our friend a complimentary (little) birthday cake for his birthday.
I am embarrased that I took the review as the way things were and sad as I have missed out on months of enjoying the nicest looking place on the escalator.
P.S How do you think a chicken schnitzel is cooked?
