Setting
In the Hyatt Regency hotel in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, The Chinese Restaurant is a small but elegant room with art deco come traditional tea-house decor. There are formal private dining rooms, an outdoor terrace and a stylish lounge next door where jazz musicians play where you can order the same food in a more relaxed setting. We went on a Sunday night, when it was very busy with large Chinese families enjoying the myriad of delicacies available. This seems to be the busiest time so definitely make a reservation if you are going on the weekend.

Food
The Chinese Restaurant lives up to its name and serves a range of authentic Chinese cuisine, particularly dim sum and Cantonese specialities. The menu is extensive with numerous sections broken down in to categories such as Chef Lo’s Seasonal Menu, Dim Sum, Fish and Shellfish, Barbecue and multiple set menus, it would have been helpful if a member of staff asked if we wanted assistance with choosing. The double-boiled crab meat soup with bamboo pith and young papaya (HK$180) is aesthetically pleasing, presented in a papaya but the fish broth with a few pieces of crab floating in it is bland. The house speciality of barbecued pork (HK$135) is tasty and succulent. Wok-fried lobster with ginger and spring onions comes in a generous portion, however the bed of noodles it came on are too soft and not entirely necessary. Stir-fried honey peas with lily bulbs (HK130) are a highlight and the tastiest item of the meal. To finish, the complimentary chilled mango pudding is a light and refreshing way to end the meal.

Wine
The Chinese Restaurant shares the same wine list as Hugo’s next door, which features an impressive selection from Bordeaux. Surprisingly, there are no Chinese wines available. Wines are categorised by varietals and there is a large selection by the glass.

Service
While we could have used some assistance in navigating the extensive menu, other than that the service is very good throughout the meal, with friendly and very efficient staff.
Price
A meal for two comes to about HK$1,500. While this is not inexpensive, it is about right considering its location inside the Hyatt hotel.
