Soho’s Bouchon Bistro Francais is a welcome addition to the Hong Kong bistro scene. Homesick French diners will be charmed by the authentic bistro décor. Although the vibe is undeniably French, the floor plan is all Hong Kong and patrons who do not wish to rub elbows with their neighbours would be well-advised to request a table in the restaurant’s intimate outdoor dining area. The open kitchen and inviting, if hectic, bar area puts diners in the heart of the action but the scene is never overwhelming, making Bouchon perfect for both dating couples and small groups out for a night on the town.
Food
It would be hard to go wrong with anything from Bouchon’s extensive menu of casual French classics. Don’t expect anything fussy here. The kitchen efficiently turns out flawless bistro favourites in oversized portions. So much so that diners should seriously consider ordering half-sized portions where available. The charcuterie platter is a highlight of the meal but even a half order (HK$188) could easily feed four. The half-order of frog legs persillade (HK$128) are delicious, with crisp golden skin and lots of garlic but again, more than two people could finish. Similarly, the half-order of mussels marinière (HK$ 188) are perfectly prepared with a thick buttery stock and served with some of the best French fries this side of Paris. The fois gras torchon (HK$158) with toasted baguette served with an accompanying glass of Sauterne (HK$68) is more mercifully portioned and a revelation: a perfect example of top quality ingredients simply and flawlessly prepared. Despite all of the rich and over-sized food on offer, diners will be well advised to save room for dessert as the chocolate Bouchon cakes (HK$68) are decadent and delicious.
Wine
Bouchon has an impressive selection of wine to fit any budget and the staff is well informed and ready with suggestions to suit your meal. The wine list understandably favours French producers so lovers of new world wines may want to bring their own; the corkage fee is HK$200.
Service
The service is prompt and professional. Big smiles are backed up by an in-depth knowledge of the menu and an efficiency that keeps the sometimes chaotic dining area humming and satisfied.
Price
Dinner for two with wine will come to about HK$900, which at first glance, may not seem like the most affordable option. However, the quality ingredients and over-sized portions more than justify the prices.
