Setting
The first Hong Kong dining venture of lauded native restaurateur Alan Yau (he of UK-based Wagamama, Hakkasan and Yauatcha fame), Bettys Kitschen has made a bright entrance. Literally, as guests are greeted by a pair of floor-to-ceiling grocers’ racks handsomely stocked with colourful fruit and veg. After this vibrant welcoming cornucopia, the interior is surprisingly restrained. A muted colour palette helps to foster a relaxed vibe, while a superabundance of ceiling fans and a scattering of stripped-bare dangling lights add quirky nuances, all courtesy of designer Andre Fu. A harbour view graces one side of the space, while there are two semi-private dining areas at the far end. |

Food
Having made his name serving Asian food in Europe, it makes a perverse kind of sense that Yau would choose to focus on European cuisine for his first foray in Asia. Taillevent meat pie (HK$288) is a germane appetiser as the weather cools. This rustic pastry is filled with a flavourful combination of rabbit, pork, duck and foie gras, while a black truffle jus begs to be mopped up with each forkful. While not the most original dish on the menu, a duo carpaccio of sea scallops and Brittany lobster, truffles and avocado dressing (HK$378) features markedly fresh ingredients, simply presented. On to mains, and stuffed calamari (HK$228) offers a compelling mélange of flavours and textures. Three oval pieces of squid are stuffed with piperade, a traditional Basque Country combination of red and green bell pepper, onions and tomatoes, plus chorizo, and plated atop the moreish Venere black rice and lobster sauce. Thirty-six-hour braised short ribs, manuka honey and soy glaze (HK$398) comes as one large, brazen US rib that should arouse the interest of any committed carnivore. The meat is nicely marbled, moist and tender, while the honey/soy coating gives it a lip-smacking umami sweetness. One of the more intriguing dishes on the menu is the whole lemon confit tart (HK$118), which is immersed in syrup for at least 72 hours then filled with lemon sorbet, grapefruit sorbet and lemon curd to create a satisfyingly offbeat take on the dessert. But give the crème brûlée (HK$98) a miss; it’s somewhat oddly served in a wide, shallow bowl and failed the all-important spoon-cracking test. |

Wine
The wine list is relatively compact but offers amble breadth of choice across old and new world as well as well- and lesser-known names. Vintages from Bordeaux and Burgundy are well represented, as are Tuscan wines, and there are 14 tipples available by the glass. |

Service
Despite being obliged to wear green corduroy waistcoats (guys) and ruffled pseudo-kilts (girls) that make them look like escapees from a Scottish or Irish theme bar, the staff are friendly and welcoming, particularly the sommelier, a composed and deferential chap. A couple of misdelivered orders during our visit suggests there’s still some work to be done, however. |

Price
A three-course dinner for two, without wine, is about HK$1,500; middling value for this part of town. A five-course set menu and a seven-course tasting menu are also available, priced HK$698 and HK$998, respectively. |

Fortunately I have only eaten there when the weekend brunch menu was available. The first visit was passable but the service was very poor. The second visit was a disaster. The food was inedible, the staff were even worse than the first visit. When the manager was approached he made the excuse that IFC had insisted that the restaurant should open before they were ready and "had I tried to recruit good restaurant staff in Hong Kong?" !!!There would seem to be a problem with the staff in the kitchen also because my food order should never have been sent out. |

I've visited Bettys 7 times since it opened and understandibly a few teething niggles but each visit better than the last. The service is always friendly and the food consistently good, i love the fact i can enjoy some good 'ol comfort food one visit or something more seriously brasserie the next. I'm delighted Bettys has opened but not so delighted that they only serve croissants for breakfast! A couple more weeks and Bettys will be through the opening wobbles i'm sure. Definitely worth a visit for Lunch or Dinner.....breakfast maybe not! |

I went for lunch with a friend. We ordered the 65 degree egg and the ale battered fish and chips. We were anticipating two delicious plates of food but they turned out to be mediocre. Both plates of food were lukewarm at best. The duck fat fries were soggy and some of the batter on the fish didn't seem to be cooked properly tasting of undercooked flour. On the plus side the fish inside the batter was succulent and the presentation of both the dishes were good. The interior was modern and stylish but we were slightly put off by the paper tablecloths. Don't think we'll be going again. |

We arrived at Bettys by happenstance, after being scared off by the 45 minute wait at a few LFK eateries. The staff were friendly and the sommelier knew his wines. When they had a problem with the souffle not rising their recovery was immediate with them cooking another one and tiding us over with some bread.
The food was superb and the mishap was recovered beautifully by the Maitre D. We found the staff excellent and did not realize this was just a newly open restaurant so there are bound to be issues until they are up and running. My creme brulee was to die for. We will definitely be back but next time a little more prepared for a fine dining experience. |

Just had lunch at Betty's and apart from being quite noisy for me due to the open layout I thought the experience was very good. The lunch time selections are quite narrow but surprisingly covers a wide gamut for most diners. You can also select off the main menu. The risottos are all excellent and also interesting and not run of the mill. The wine selection by the glass is very eclectic and shows the sommelier here is right on top of things. Any restaurant with the cojones to serve Txakoli, the refreshing white wine from the Basque country, deserves real praise. |
