Located in the Alfred Dunhill store in the Prince’s Building, Alfie’s by KEE is divided into two areas, a restaurant area and a more relaxed lounge/bar section. The décor is similarly stylish to the fabulous Kee Club, the owners of which joined forces with Alfred Dunhill for the project. The feeling is a modern twist on a gentleman’s smoking room that manages to be welcoming to ladies, too. The atmosphere on our visit was lively with both the lounge and the restaurant replete with drinkers and diners, many of whom are likely to have
dropped by straight from nearby Central offices.
Food
The menu consists of British stalwarts such as prawn cocktail, fish
and chips, roast chicken, fillet steak and bangers and mash. The
fairly limited and somewhat obvious selection, however, may leave some
guests struggling to find something that takes their fancy. The H.Forman & Son’s London Cure Smoked Salmon with goat’s curd, lightly pickled cucumber and haricot vert was more of a salad than the description implied and the quality of the smoked salmon was somewhat overwhelmed. The dish would have benefited from a slice of lemon, which was surprisingly absent. The prawn cocktail tasted fresh and there was a reasonable serving of prawns. The Ticklemore goat cheese, sage and caramelised onion tart was well presented, but the filling
had a consistency similar to cottage cheese and there was not as much
flavour as expected. The cod in the fish and chips was well cooked and
the large, fat chips hit the spot, though the accompanying mushy peas were a little bland - though the cottage pie was exceedingly tasty with succulent, tender pieces of veal in a rich gravy topped by creamy, smooth potato. The highlight of the meal was dessert, particularly the Eton mess, which was excellent. The apple and raisin crumble was also worth a nod.
Wine
The wine list is strong with a good selection of new and old world
wines. The by-the-glass list is concise at four whites and four reds, but is very well selected and reasonably priced. Diners can also select wine from the attached Berry Bros wine store and pay corkage.
Service
While the staff was eager to please, the service was patchy with some
real faux pas, such as trying to fill an empty (used) white wine glass with
red wine. Hopefully these are teething problem that will get ironed out over the next few months.
Price
Dinner and a couple of glasses of wine will set you back around
HK$1,000 - a little on the expensive side for posh pub food despite the
excellent surroundings.
I went to Alfie's last week and I absolutely loved it! I thought the menu was a bit small but the quality of the dishes was superb - We had the prawn cocktail which was fantastic! the sausage roll was delicious as was smoked mackerel salad. For mains we had salmon with lentils, cottage pie and steak and chips; the steak was sooo tender and the cottage pie was awesome. double thumbs up. I thought the service was good for a new restaruant.
Great setting. I had the steak which was served well, covered in gravy, that I didn't expect and would have asked for on the side if I had know, however the gravy was very good after all - Fat chips were excellent - For Dessert the Apple crumble was crunchy and tasty but had such a little scoop of Madagascan Vanilla Ice cream that you have to order another scoop to go with it.
On the whole - the food was very good.
What I didn't like was the awful smell when I first came up the stairs. I thought the drains had errupted... it was terrible. I kept asking about it and eventually a staff told me that it was in fact LemonGrass air that they pipe through the restaurant.
I have never smelled LemonGrass like that.
I will definitely go back though... I'm used to worst smells in HK. Try walking down Sheung Wan in the Summer.
