Sustainable Seafood in Hong Kong

Find out which restaurants serve sustainable seafood, in conjunction with WWF’s Sustainable Seafood Week

By Cindy Chan

With a beautiful harbour and wonderful coastlines, it is not surprising that locals are major fans of seafood here in Hong Kong, especially when we are fortunate enough to get seafood from all around the world. But at the same time, while eating the delicious roe of a hairy crab or even reaching for a plate of toro from the sushi conveyor belt, a lot of diners forget the harm that we are doing to our waters and how our seafood consumption is depleting the marine resources worldwide. According to a report published by the UN in 2010, Hong Kong is the second largest per capita consumer of seafood in Asia, which means that if we only changed our eating habits and ate sustainable seafood only, we are in a unique position to really change the market for sustainable seafood.

Check out Asia Tatler Dining's own Responsible Seafood Guide here.

To raise consumers' awareness to the damage most of us are ignorantly doing to our oceans and promote the concept of sustainable seafood, WWF Hong Kong will be launching the Sustainable Seafood Week from November 26 to December 4. Around ten restaurants in the Soho area in Central will be offering Ocean Friendly Menus (OFM) which will feature dishes that uses sustainable seafood chosen in accordance to the WWF-Hong Kong sustainable seafood guide, which is available in English and Chinese, and downloadable for free here.

Restaurants participating in Sustainable Seafood Week 2011 include:

- Coast
- Lil' Siam
- iCaramba!
- McSorley's Ale House
- Taku
- Posto Pubblico
- La Perouse
- Entourage
- Shore

Apart from the restaurants participating in the Sustainable Seafood Week, there are actually over 40 restaurants in Hong Kong that have joined the WWF Sustainable Seafood programme already, which means that they serve sustainable seafood year-round. These include:

· Aberdeen Boat Club
· AsiaWorld-Expo
· The Banqueting House
· The China House
· FINDS
· Grand Central Bar & Grill
· The Helena May
· The Hong Kong Jockey Club
· Jumbo Kingdom
· Ladies' Recreation Club
· Super Star Seafood Restaurants

Among the list, the Grand Central will be presenting a new sustainable seafood menu that runs from now until November 30. The menu includes pan-roasted Australian sardine with chorizo sausage, black olive and tomato concasse; GC's gourmet sustainable seafood pie (pictured below) and char-grilled Alaskan halibut fillet with ginger cream sauce. Additionally, for every order from the sustainable menu, Grand Central will make a donation to WWF Hong Kong for its marine conservation cause.

At FINDS, the Nordic restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui, dinners can find its signature Nordic seafood platter that consists of sustainable scallops, cold shrimp, mussels and salmon, and other tempting dishes such as its house-smoked salmon and blue mussels with Finn fries that uses sustainable seafood as ingredients.
