48 Hours of Fine Dining in Bangkok

As summer arrives, we ask our counterparts in Bangkok to bring you the best of the local dining scene

We had written two culinary itineraries here on Asia Tatler Dining Hong Kong on the two SARs, Hong Kong and Macau, mainly for the benefit of visitors to our fair shores. But with summer approaching, we ask our counterparts at Asia Tatler Dining Thailand to return the favour and give us a local's itinerary to the capital City of Angels, Bangkok.

Friday night:

7pm: Kick off your weekend with a taste of authentic Thai food, served with a side of media controversy. Helmed by Australian-born David Thompson, Thai restaurant Nahm has been at the centre of a heated discussion between Thai and foreign food critics about whether foreign-born chefs can cook Thai food.

10pm: Mosey over to Vertigo's Moon Bar, set over 60 storeys above the ground, for a sweeping panoramic view of the city from dizzying heights.

Saturday:

10am: Head straight to Kuppa to linger over their delicious house-roasted medium and dark roast coffees, mouth-wateringly creamy bread puddings and all-day breakfast menu.

It's a 20-minute walk to the nearest BTS, where you can take the skytrain to Saphan Taksin at the Chao Phraya River to schedule a two-hour river cruise.

2pm: After the tour, have the boat drop you off at the riverside Mandarin Oriental. Absorb a bit of history at the Author's Lounge, previously a favourite hangout of such world-renowned authors as Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham and James Michener.

Take a taxi to the nearest BTS, and then ride to Siam station and spend the afternoon perusing wares at Bangkok's shopping mecca Siam Paragon or watching a movie at its world-class theatres.

7pm: Take the BTS to Surasak station and head to Blue Elephant for some quintessential Thai fare.

10pm: Temper a great night out with some hangover prevention at Grand Hyatt Erawan's You and Mee, which provides street-side noodles at an upmarket location.

Sunday:

9am: Hurry to family-friendly hangout Crepes & Co to refuel for a mid-morning run to the largest open-air market in Southeast Asia, Chatuchak Market. Crepes and Co is near Asoke BTS, so after breakfast, depart from this station for Chatuchak Market for your last taste of Bangkok.

1pm: Post-Chatuchak Market, there is no greater send-off than the brunch at Four Seasons Hotel, which extends to 2 pm. A jazz band plays, and you can dine al fresco in an area bordering a pond. While you wait for your selections to be brought to you, sip a mimosa, tea or champagne, put your feet up, reflect on meals past and toast the end of a delicious Bangkok culinary tour.
