Inspired by the cultural exchange by Zhang He's seven naval expeditions across the passage of the South Seas, Nanhai No. 1 at iSquare in Tsim Sha Tsui has invited 88-year-old chef Xun Chen to re-create the nostalgic Cantonese dim sum reminiscent of old Hong Kong. Chef Chen was once the youngest dim sum head chef at the old Guangzhou Liuguo Restaurant in the 1940s and his special dim sum integrate a variety of flavours that the younger crowd has never seen. From now until March 31, there will be 10 special dim sum available during lunch including:

- steamed quail egg stuffed in shrimp paste
- grapefruit peel and roast pig roll
- steamed beef roll wrapped in lard web
- chicken liver and green onion puff
- deep-fried banana dumpling

We are fond of Chez Patrick's original home on Peel Street in Soho, but on a recent visit, we did find that the interiors were starting to look a bit, well, worn. Which is why although we are sad to say goodbye to the cute space and location, we are not all together surprised to learn that it has moved to the much newer The East in Wan Chai. Chez Patrick in Soho will close for business on March 31 and will re-open at the below address at the end of April.

Earth Hour is organised by the WWF and held on the last Saturday of every March and even here in polluted Hong Kong, a lot of residents and businesses care enough to switch off their lights for an hour to raise awareness on climate change. Langham Place in Mong Kok is going one step further: not only is it keeping off its external lights throughout the night rather than the required one hour, it is also throwing a party at Portal to celebrate. Guests are invited to join and partake in the festivities from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on March 31, drinking CarboNZero wine (a pinot noir and a sauvignon blanc produced by Yealands Way that have been certified as carbon-neutral); cocktails made with herbs from the hotel's own herb garden such as one called Save Me, made with ginger, home-grown mint, rose and lavender syrup, apple and pineapple juice, and soda. To go with the drinks, there are also organic canapés such as:

- organic home-cured beetroot salmon with zucchini and goat's cheese

- organic chawanmushi-style egg custard with sustainable prawns

- chicken tenders made from organic chicken breast with homemade mayo

- organic berry compote with yoghurt and granola

Ever since Dickens at The Excelsior closed earlier this year for renovations, there has been a large pub-shaped hole in our lives. Which is why we're so excited to hear that one of our favourite pubs (that is also conveniently close to our office) will be re-opening on March 20. The menu includes some new comfort food items such as a pork terrine encased in short crust pastry or a bucket of prawns with buttered brown bread. Of course, classic English favourites such as steak and kidney pie; fish pie; Cumberland sausages with mash; curries; and all-day breakfast in a pan remain on the menu. Even better, the curry buffet lunch is still available weekdays from 12noon to 2.30pm.
