New Italian Summer Cocktails
208 and Assaggio Trattoria Italiana mix up refreshing concoctions to beat the heat |
It looks like it's not just us who are melting in the sun: in this heat, it's hard to work up an appetite for anything more than a salad and perhaps a tad too often, a liquid dinner seems like a much simpler option. Our new favourite summer cocktails are coincidentally found at two Italian restaurants.
208 on the end of Hollywood Road has long been a favourite thanks to its relaxed vibe and beautiful décor. Now there are a number more reasons to while away our Saturdays in their downstairs bar: the first is the Sgroppino. A traditional Italian drink made with chilled vodka, Prosecco and lemon sorbet, when done right, it is one of the most refreshing drinks you could have on a sweltering day. On a more local note, 208 also has a new Firecracker drink: much like eating spicy Sichuan food can actually cool you down by forcing you to sweat, the Hong Kong-inspired Firecracker made with rum, Cointreau, lime, watermelon and cayenne pepper promises to be a contrarily fresh drink.
Our other new favourite watering hole is Assaggio Trattoria Italiana: Assaggio is located in Wan Chai in the Arts Centre and serves an array of casual Italian dishes. You are, however, more likely to find us on their alfresco terrace sipping on one of their two new cocktails: the Gold & Diamond made with Italian liquor, whisky, lime juice over crushed ice; or the Campari spritz – made with Campari, Prosecco, olive and sliced orange.

New Cheese Classes at Classified
Cheese-lovers can now take a master class from Classified’s cheese master |
Classified is already one of the top destinations for cheese-lovers in Hong Kong, and now the cheese retailer is giving us even more reason to go there with their new cheese master class series. Kicking off on July 27, the classes will be taught by Classified's resident cheese expert Wendy Wu and will be held on the last Wednesday or Thursday of every month.

The first class will introduce students to goat cheese, with Wu highlighting the differences between traditional-flavoured and modern-made goat cheese, as well as tasting a selection of goat cheese from France and the UK. August's class (held on August 31) will be all about blue cheeses, with over ten blue cheeses being introduced, discussed and most importantly, tasted, from France, the UK and Italy.
July's class is taught at the Classified on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan and costs HK$280 per person. August's class is at the Classified in Exchange Square and is HK$295 per person. Both classes start at 7.30 in the evening and lasts for 90 minutes. Each class is limited to 20 students only so make your booking soon.

Ra Opens in Tsim Sha Tsui
A new Egyptian and Mediterranean dining experience |
Named after the ancient Egyptian sun god, Ra gives diners a new Egyptian option when they arrive at Tsim Sh Tsui. Located on the stretch of Mody Road with its seafront bars and restaurants, Ra has a Mediterranean-inspired décor with an alfresco dining area set in front of the spectacular panoramic views of the Victoria Harbour.
Diners can take in the alfresco evening air as they indulge in exotic drinks and fruit flavored shishas (Egyptian water pipe) as an aperitif. Alternatively, head straight to the dining room to enjoy chef Maged Makram's creations. Chef Makram has worked at the Sheraton Hotel & Fairmont Hotel in Cairo and possesses over 20 years of experience in preparing authentic Middle East and Egypt cuisine. Here's hoping that Ra will provide an authentic Middle Eastern experience, something that Hong Kong currently just does not have enough of.

Petite Amanda Opens
The bakery by model Amanda Strang finally opens in IFC |
French-born local model Amanda Strang, more popularly known as Amanda S., has finally realised her dream of opening her own patisserie here in Hong Kong. For the many followers of her blog, this should not come as a surprise. The model trained at the Four Seasons Hong Kong's pastry kitchen for a few months before jetting off to Paris to finish her pastry degree at Le Cordon Bleu.
Located on Level 2 of IFC mall in Central, the brightly-lit shop offers pretty pastries, many of which are done in feminine pastel shades, as well as freshly baked bread including the classic French baguette, croissant and pain au chocolat.
